In a day that held more adventure than you could poke a stick at, Team Paddy Pallin – Shotz took out the trifecta at round one of the Teva Adventure Series 2008! Not only did they take out line honours and first place in the Premier Mixed Category, they also took out the $450 cash prize as the first team across the line wearing Teva Footwear!
Perth in the Wild, Wild West played host to a day of adventure, mayhem and fun as teams lined up for the first Teva Adventure Series event of 2008. In a day that included some ups & downs with an awesome 20m Rock Climbing Wall and a 20m abseil tower, and some fun on the ground at the archery range, mountain biking, trekking, orienteering and a whole lot more, teams lined up to take on the challenge of an adventure race with a difference!
Beautiful Langford Park and Manjedal Recreation Centre played host to the wild antics of the event and set the perfect back drop for a day of adventure in the outdoors! After a week of torrential rain, the Gods were smiling down on Teva Perth as the sun rose above the horizon just as registration opened and continued to shine brightly throughout the day. And with a huge jump from 47 to 72 teams this year they were definitely keen to find out exactly what was in store.
The Teva Adventure Series is an event with a difference. Participants only find out the exact race location 5 days before the event and the course is revealed just one hour before the start. Strategy and planning play a part in the outcome as well as a team’s physical fitness, mountain biking ability and navigational skills.
With basic navigation (if teams can read a street map, they usually have no problem navigating) and courses that provide alternative route options depending on your skills and abilities, The Teva Adventure Series is perfect for beginners to come along and try their hand at one of Australia’s fastest growing sports, while still keeping the more experienced and competitive teams competing right up until the final checkpoint.
With only one hour to plan, Race HQ fell eerily quiet as most teams, planned, strategised and set their plans for the day, while others chose to chill out and take things as they came!
As always with the Teva Adventure Series teams should assume nothing and expect anything, and the race brief offered a few clues (if you were switched on) to help teams along the way.
The event started with the first twist of the day as Teams were set the task to rescue their team Captain’s in Men’s Health International Rescue. It was here that team captain’s found out if they really had chosen the right team mates. Most were pleasantly surprised, some were left wondering.
After the bedlam of Men’s Health International Rescue it was off on the first leg of the course with both courses off on their Mountain Bikes, some heading north, some heading south.
At TA C, our Male, Female & Corporate Teams found out just how observant they really were at the Mountain Designs ‘Gear for places you’d rather be’ challenge. Some who had a memory like an elephant took the short route and others who had a memory like my Nan took the long route before taking on ‘It’s a Number’s Game’ and while some teams (mostly the girls) finished this challenge at the speed on knots, others (mostly the guys) were off up the 400m steep incline to pick up the clues.
After excelling at TA C it was back on the bikes and back to HQ where a mayhem of challenges awaited.
In Ups, Downs or On the Ground teams chose between going up the Rock Climbing Wall or down the abseil tower. And although we offered a less adventurous ‘On the Ground’ option, all teams chose their own adventure and took to the skies!
Top of the Pops saw us discover some budding Idol stars and teams were definately aiming high as they took on the ‘Target It’ challenge at the archery range.
Meanwhile back at the ranch on the southern leg, our Mixed teams got a bit ‘Wet & Wild’ at TA 5, before taking on the orienteering leg. And as with all Teva events, orienteering ain’t just orienteering, and this years twist saw teams with their real estate heads on.
The final leg was a beautiful mountain bike course through Langford Park and back to HQ to head for the finish line and although every team looked like winners as they crossed the finish line. The teams to make it there before the rest were….
